Where Hope Rides: A New Arena and a New Horse Bring New Possibilities
Tucked into the heart of Poway is a place where lives are changed—not just through therapy, but through the powerful bond between horse and rider. Ride Above Disability (RAD), a therapeutic riding center, has long served individuals with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges, empowering them to “Celebrate Ability, Create Hope, and Ride Above Challenges.”
Thanks to a $8,000 grant from the Poway Community Foundation, RAD entered an exciting new chapter. The grant funded the construction of a brand-new riding arena and the purchase—and full-year sponsorship—of a new therapy horse. These additions have been nothing short of transformational. The arena, completed in January 2025, has dramatically expanded RAD’s capacity. Where once the program supported just over 50 riders weekly, RAD now welcomes more than 100 participants each week, with a goal of reaching 130 by year’s end. This increased capacity has helped shrink waitlists and opened doors for more families in need of therapeutic services.
“Our mission has always been to empower through horsemanship,” said Allie Sarnataro, Executive Director of RAD. “This new arena allows us to do that on a much larger scale. It’s not just a structure—it’s a symbol of what’s possible when the community comes together to support inclusion and healing.”
The grant also brought a special new addition to the RAD family: Remi, a retired thoroughbred racehorse now beginning a second, meaningful career. Remi is able to provide up to 10 therapy lessons per week and has quickly become a favorite among riders and volunteers alike for his gentle nature and eager spirit.
RAD’s services extend far beyond riding. Through its robust volunteer, internship, and work-study programs, RAD trains young people in all aspects of therapeutic horsemanship, fostering a culture of giving, learning, and community. The new arena has made it possible to engage even more volunteers, broadening the circle of lives touched by the program.
The impact of the Poway Community Foundation’s grant goes well beyond bricks, mortar, and hay. It’s seen in the smiles of riders gaining confidence, the volunteers finding purpose, and families discovering a place of healing and hope. “We are deeply grateful to the Poway Community Foundation for believing in our mission,” RAD’s team shared. “This grant has been a game-changer—not just for us, but for every rider whose life has been enriched through this program.”
Together, we’re not just building arenas. We’re building confidence, independence, and a stronger, more inclusive community.
