Building a Fire-Ready Community: How a $2,000 Grant Helped Launch PNEC's Defensible Space Program

At the Poway Community Foundation, we know that wildfire preparedness is one of the most pressing needs facing our community. That's why we awarded a $2,000 grant to the Poway Neighborhood Emergency Corps (PNEC), supporting the launch of their new Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) and Defensible Space program.

Thanks to this funding, PNEC successfully launched the program in April 2026, marking a significant milestone for the organization and the community it serves. Grant funding enabled PNEC to train dedicated volunteers to conduct home assessments, the critical first step in helping residents better protect their properties from wildfire risk. During this initial training phase, volunteers completed six home assessments, gaining hands-on experience while delivering immediate value to local homeowners.

The program offers two layers of support:

  • HIZ assessments, available to any Poway homeowner who wants to improve their property's wildfire safety.

  • Defensible space assistance, reserved for residents who are physically or financially unable to complete the work themselves.

The outcomes so far are meaningful:

  • Six home assessments completed, combining volunteer training with real benefit to homeowners.

  • A trained volunteer base ready to expand assessments through future trainings and Days of Service.

  • A new program in place that residents can rely on for years to come.

This launch represents more than a new service. It signals the beginning of a more resilient, prepared, and connected Poway. By equipping volunteers with specialized skills and mobilizing them through ongoing trainings and Days of Service, the program builds a culture of shared responsibility and proactive risk reduction. Over time, this effort will reduce wildfire vulnerability, strengthen neighborhood ties, and give residents the knowledge and resources to protect what matters most.

At Poway Community Foundation, we are proud to support programs like this one, which lay the foundation for long-term safety, sustainability, and community-driven action right here in Poway.
